Barnegat Bay
Decoy and Bayman's Museum

PHOTO COURTESY OF MRS MARIE DISBROW
Dedicated To
Preserving the Unique History
of the Jersey Shore Baymen
Located in Historic
Tuckerton, the Museum is a 1,330 square foot replica of a
hunting shanty where you are greeted on the porch by a wax
figure of the late "master" carver Harry V. Shourds,
as if hard at work carving the many decoys he is said to have
supplied market gunners for 40 years.
Exhibits at the museum represent the
life of the Barnegat Bay Baymen and their traditional skills in
boat building, oystering, clamming, blacksmithing, decoy
carving, eel spearing, eel and clam basket weaving, charter boat
fishing, gunning, life-saving, pound fishing, salt hay
harvesting, net mending and knot tying.
Major features and displays include a Barnegat Bay Sneakbox by
Josephus Seaman, a Sea Bright Skiff by National Heritage Fellow
Charles B. Hankins, a Life-Saving Station Exhibit and over 100
decoys and shorebirds carved by New Jersey native sons. There
are also baymen's tools which include tongs and rakes for
oystering and clamming, eel pots, eel spears, shrimp nets,
snapper canes, decoy carving tools, shotguns, old hunting
equipment, antique fishing paraphernalia, sail making tools and
old maritime records and journals. Also an extensive and unique
collection of over 4,000 antique photographs that depict the
life of the Baymen and the Jersey Shore's Barnegat Bay Region.
